Marshall University is a public research university in Huntington, West Virginia. It was founded in 1837 as Marshall Academy and became a university in 1961. In the fall of 2020, it had an enrollment of 10,781 students. The university's athletic teams compete in Conference USA.
The university is named after John Marshall, the fourth Chief Justice of the United States. Marshall was born in Germantown, Virginia, in 1755. He was a planter and slaveholder. He served in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War and was a delegate to the Virginia Convention. He was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates from 1782 to 1788. He was a delegate to the Constitutional Convention in 1787 and was a signer of the Constitution. He was appointed to the Supreme Court by President George Washington in 1789 and served until his death in 1835.
Marshall Academy was founded in 1837 by the citizens of Guyandotte, Virginia (now part of Huntington, West Virginia). It was named after John Marshall. The academy was chartered by the Virginia General Assembly and its first class graduated in 1840. In 1858, the academy moved to its current location on Third Avenue in Huntington.
The school became Marshall College in 1961 and Marshall University in 1965. The university's original campus was destroyed by a fire in 1963. The university rebuilt on the current site of the Huntington Civic Center. The Marshall University Forensic Science Graduate Program is the only program in the United States that is accredited by the American Academy of Forensic Sciences.
The university offers over 140 undergraduate and 60 graduate programs. The university's athletic teams, known as the Thundering Herd, compete in Conference USA. The football team has won 15 conference championships, including 13 in the Mid-American Conference. The men's basketball team has won the Conference USA tournament three times and has made five NCAA tournament appearances. The women's basketball team has won the Conference USA tournament twice and has made four NCAA tournament appearances.
