Madison Area Technical College (MATC) is a public two-year technical college serving the south-central Wisconsin counties of Dane, Jefferson, Waukesha, and Rock. The college offers more than 150 degree and certificate programs in business, health, information technology, manufacturing, and other technical areas.

MATC has four campuses in the Madison metropolitan area: the Downtown Campus, the South Campus, the Truax Campus, and the Fort Atkinson Campus. The Downtown and South campuses are located in the city of Madison, the Truax Campus is located in the nearby city of Monona, and the Fort Atkinson Campus is located about 30 miles southwest of Madison in the city of Fort Atkinson.

MATC is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The college is also accredited by various professional organizations, including the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs, the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs, and the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission.

MATC was founded in 1912 as the Madison Vocational School. The school was created in response to the growing need for skilled workers in the city of Madison. The school initially offered programs in auto mechanics, carpentry, and machine shop work. In its early years, the school was housed in a variety of locations around the city, including the basement of a local high school and a former hotel.

In the late 1960s, the Madison Vocational School was renamed the Madison Area Technical Institute. The name change reflected the expanded mission of the school, which now offered programs in a variety of technical and trade fields. The school also began offering evening and weekend classes to accommodate the schedules of working adults.

In the early 1990s, the Madison Area Technical Institute was renamed the Madison Area Technical College. The name change was made to reflect the increasing academic rigor of the college's programs and the growing number of students who were transferring to four-year colleges after completing their associate degrees at MATC.

Today, Madison Area Technical College is one of the largest technical colleges in Wisconsin, serving more than 40,000 students each year. The college remains committed to providing quality technical and trade education to the residents of south-central Wisconsin.
