Macalester College was founded in 1874 by Rev. Dr. Edward Duffield Neill and Mr. John Macalester. The college was built on the site of the former Highland Park Seminary, which was founded in 1852 and closed in 1869. The first class of Macalester College consisted of seven men and three women.

Macalester College is located in Saint Paul, Minnesota, on a 110-acre (0.45 km2) campus. The campus is situated on Summit Avenue, a few blocks from the Mississippi River. The college has five residence halls: Janet Wallace Fine Arts Center, John B. Davis Hall, Markim Hall, Old Main, and Wallace Hall.
The college also has an off-campus apartment complex, Macalester Court, which houses approximately 125 upper-class students. Macalester College also owns a 75-acre (300,000 m2) nature preserve, Macalester College Ecological Park, which is located in Dakota County.
