Langston University is a public research university in Langston, Oklahoma. It is the only historically black college or university (HBCU) in the state of Oklahoma. The university is a member of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. Langston University was established in 1897 by the Oklahoma Territorial Legislature under the second Morrill Act. The university was named after John Mercer Langston, the first African American elected to the United States Congress. The campus began as a branch of Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College (now Oklahoma State University) in Stillwater, Oklahoma. It became a separate institution in 1916 and was renamed Langston University. The university struggled for accreditation and financial stability in its early years. It was accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools in 1925 and became a state-supported institution in 1933. The school began to grow rapidly in the 1950s and 1960s. Enrollment increased from 327 students in 1950 to 1,500 in 1966. The university added graduate programs in the 1970s and now offers bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees. The university has an enrollment of 2, 151 students. The campus covers over 200 acres (0.81 km2) and includes fourteen buildings. The university is governed by a nine-member Board of Regents. The university is a member of the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges and the Oklahoma Association of Private Colleges and Universities.
