Lake Erie College was founded in 1856 by the Rev. Dr. Benjamin Franklin Wade and the Rev. John W. Niles. The college was originally located in the town of Ripley, New York, but moved to Erie, Pennsylvania, in 1858. The college was chartered as a women's college by the Pennsylvania Legislature in 1858. The first class of students graduated in 1862.
In 1865, the college was renamed Lake Erie Female College. The name was changed again in 1889 to Lake Erie College for Women. The college began admitting men in 1955 and became fully co-educational in 1969.
The college offers a liberal arts curriculum and awards bachelor's degrees in a variety of majors. The college is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.
Lake Erie College has a long tradition of athletics. The college's teams, known as the Storm, compete in the NCAA Division II. The college fields teams in a variety of sports, including basketball, cross country, golf, lacrosse, soccer, softball, tennis, and volleyball.
