Howard Payne University was founded in 1889 by John D. Robnett, a professor at Baylor University, and James W. Dillard, a Baptist minister. The university was named after Edward Howard Payne, a Baptist minister and educator. The university's first president was Robert B. Rutledge. The university began with an initial class of six students. The university grew rapidly, and by 1925, the university had an enrollment of over 1,000 students. The university offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs. The university is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
