Hollins University is a private university in Virginia. It is one of the oldest institutions of higher education for women in the United States. The university offers undergraduate programs in the liberal arts, sciences, and business, as well as graduate programs in writing, education, and business.
Founded in 1842 as Valley Union Seminary, Hollins is the oldest college in Virginia chartered specifically for women. The school became Hollins College in 1852 and was one of the first women's colleges to offer graduate education, with the establishment of a graduate school in 1925. The university was originally located in the town of Hollins, Virginia, but has since expanded to include a main campus in Roanoke, Virginia, as well as satellite campuses in Oxford, England, and Florence, Italy.
Hollins University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award bachelor's and master's degrees. The Hollins College for Women was ranked #57 among the Best Regional Colleges in the South by U.S. News & World Report in 2019. The Hollins graduate programs in business, creative writing, and education were each ranked in the top 100 of their respective categories by the same publication.
