Hartwick College was founded in 1797 by John Christopher Hartwick, a Lutheran minister. The college was originally located in Hartwick, New York, and was known as Hartwick Seminary. The seminary was the first Lutheran seminary in the United States. In 1816, the seminary was chartered as a college by the New York State Legislature, and in 1845, the college moved to its current location in Oneonta, New York.
