Governors State University is a public university located in University Park, Illinois, United States. The university was established in 1969 as a state-supported, two-year college. In 1995, the school became a four-year institution and began awarding bachelor's degrees. As of 2019, the university enrolls approximately 5,500 students.

The university is governed by a nine-member Board of Trustees, eight of whom are appointed by the Governor of Illinois. The ninth member is the student body president. The university president is the chief executive officer of the university and is responsible for its day-to-day operations.

The university offers over 60 undergraduate and graduate programs in the arts and sciences, business, education, and public administration. The university is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.

The university's main campus is located on 437 acres (1.77 km2) of land in University Park, Illinois. The campus includes several academic and administrative buildings, a library, a student center, a performing arts center, and athletic facilities. The university also operates a satellite campus in downtown Chicago, Illinois.

Governors State University is a member of the Illinois Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, the National Association of Schools of Music, and the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.
