Golden Gate University (GGU) is a private, nonprofit, coeducational university located in the Financial District of downtown San Francisco, California. Founded in 1901, GGU specializes in educating professionals through its schools of law, business, taxation, and accounting. The university offers both undergraduate and graduate programs and has a student body of over 5,000.

GGU is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and is a member of the Association of American Law Schools (AALS). The university's School of Law is also accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA).

GGU's campus is located in the heart of the Financial District, near the San Francisco Stock Exchange, the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, and the city's major law firms. The university is also within walking distance of the Ferry Building, Union Square, and Chinatown.

GGU's school colors are green and gold, and its mascot is the Phoenix. The university's sports teams compete in the NCAA Division II West Region.

Golden Gate University was founded in 1901 by John Daggett, a former judge of the Superior Court of California. The university was originally located in Oakland, but moved to San Francisco in 1908.

In its early years, GGU was a night school for working adults, offering classes in business, law, and accounting. The university gradually expanded its programs and began to offer daytime classes as well.

GGU became a nonprofit institution in 1922 and began to offer graduate programs in addition to its undergraduate programs. The university also began to expand its campus, adding new buildings in the Financial District.

In the 1970s, GGU began to offer evening and weekend classes to accommodate working students. The university also began to offer online courses in the 1990s.

GGU is currently governed by a Board of Trustees, which includes alumni, faculty, staff, and students. The university's president is David S. Baime.
