Gallaudet University is a federally chartered private university for the education of the deaf and hard of hearing located in Washington, D.C., on a campus that is adjacent to Gallaudet's historic campus in Northeast Washington. It is the world's only university with programs and services specifically designed to accommodate deaf and hard of hearing students. The university was founded in 1864 by an Act of Congress and was named after Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet, a pioneer in the education of the deaf.
Gallaudet University is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. The university's undergraduate programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Interpreter Education. The university's graduate programs in audiology and speech-language pathology are accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology.
