Florida International University is a public research university with campuses in Miami, Florida, United States. It is the largest university in South Florida, the second-largest in Florida, and the fourth-largest in the United States. Florida International University is classified as a "high research activity" university by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. The university offers 191 programs of study with more than 280 majors in 23 colleges and schools. These include Arts and Sciences, Business, Engineering and Computing, Education and Human Development, Law, Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, and Tourism, Hospitality and Sports Management. In addition to its main campus in Miami, FIU has two satellite campuses in North Miami and Downtown Miami.
FIU began in 1965 as an upper-division college. The Florida Legislature authorized the creation of the university in 1968, and the South Florida Education Center was established the following year. The center consisted of Miami-Dade College and the University of Miami, which each operated a separate but co-located campus. The Legislature mandated that the new university consist of two campuses, one in Miami and one in South Florida. The original plan for the university included the construction of a new campus on the site of the former Tamiami Airport, but the site was later deemed unsuitable for a campus and was sold in 1974. The university then built its main campus on the former site of the Richmond Naval Air Station, which was purchased from the federal government in 1972.
The university is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. It is also a member of the Association of American Universities, the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities, and the Florida Consortium of Metropolitan Research Universities. FIU is classified as a "Doctoral/Research University-Intensive" by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.
As of 2019, FIU has an enrollment of 54,099 students, making it the largest university in South Florida and the fourth-largest in the state. The university's student body is composed of students from over 170 countries. The university offers a wide range of undergraduate, graduate, and professional degrees.
The university is governed by a thirteen-member Board of Trustees. The Board of Trustees is responsible for the overall management and operation of the university. The university's president is Mark B. Rosenberg. Rosenberg is the seventh president of FIU and has served in that role since 2009.
The university has an annual budget of $1.6 billion and an endowment of $363 million. FIU is a member of the State University System of Florida and receives its funding from the State of Florida, tuition, and private donations.
The university is home to a number of research institutes and centers, including the Center for Children and Families, the Center for Latin American Studies, the Center for Women's and Gender Studies, the Metropolitan Center, and the Cuban Research Institute. FIU also operates a number of museums and galleries, including the Frost Art Museum, the Wolfsonian-FIU, and the Patricia & Phillip Frost Museum of Science.
FIU is a member of the NCAA Division I and competes in Conference USA. The university's athletics teams are known as the Panthers. The Panthers have won a number of conference championships and have made several appearances in NCAA Division I postseason tournaments.
