Ferris State University is a public university in Big Rapids, Michigan. The school was founded in 1884 as the Big Rapids Industrial School by Woodbridge Nathan Ferris, an educator from New York. The school began as a vocational school, but it soon expanded its curriculum to include liberal arts and sciences courses. In 1949, the school was renamed Ferris Institute. The school became a four-year university in 1965 and was renamed Ferris State College. In 1987, the school attained university status and was renamed Ferris State University. Today, the university enrolls over 14,000 students in more than 190 undergraduate and graduate programs. The university is organized into seven colleges: the College of Business, the College of Education and Human Services, the College of Engineering Technology, the College of Health Professions, the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, the College of Pharmacy, and the Kendall College of Art and Design. The university's athletic teams compete in Division II of the NCAA and are known as the Bulldogs. The university's main campus is located in Big Rapids, Michigan, about 60 miles north of Grand Rapids. The university also has campuses in Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, and Traverse City, Michigan.
