Eastern University is a private, coeducational university located in St. Davids, Pennsylvania, United States, in the suburbs of Philadelphia. The university's main campus is located on a 124-acre (0.50 km2) campus in the suburban community of St. Davids, just outside Philadelphia. Eastern also has two additional campuses: one in Center City Philadelphia and another in Wayne, Pennsylvania. The university is affiliated with the American Baptist Churches USA.
Founded in 1925, Eastern University has been accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education since 1928. The university offers more than 80 undergraduate majors and programs, as well as graduate programs in business, education, counseling, and nursing.
Eastern University is organized into four schools: the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Business, the School of Education, and the School of Nursing. The College of Arts and Sciences offers more than 50 undergraduate majors and programs, while the School of Business offers undergraduate and graduate programs in business and accounting. The School of Education offers undergraduate and graduate programs in education, and the School of Nursing offers undergraduate and graduate programs in nursing.
The university's athletic teams, known as the Eagles, compete in the NCAA Division III and are members of the Middle Atlantic Conferences. Eastern University fields 17 varsity teams in 10 sports.
Eastern University was founded in 1925 by Dr. George D. Stoddard, then-president of New York University, and Dr. Henry C. Minton, then-president of Colgate University. The two men envisioned an institution that would provide a quality education to students from a variety of backgrounds, including those from the inner city. The university's first campus was located in the Overbrook section of Philadelphia. In 1928, the university was accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.
In the 1930s, the university began to expand its campus and its programs. The school's first graduate program, in education, was established in 1930. In 1935, the university purchased a 52-acre (21 ha) tract of land in the suburban community of St. Davids, Pennsylvania, and moved its campus there. The following year, the university established a school of business.
In the 1940s, the university continued to expand its programs and its campus. The school of nursing was established in 1945. In 1948, the university purchased an additional 124 acres (50 ha) of land adjacent to its St. Davids campus.
In the 1950s, the university added several new programs, including a graduate program in counseling and a doctoral program in psychology. In addition, the university began to offer its courses at night and on weekends to accommodate working students.
In the 1960s, the university experienced a period of growth and expansion. The campus in St. Davids was expanded, and new buildings were constructed. In addition, the university added several new graduate programs, including programs in theology, social work, and communications.
In the 1970s, the university added a number of new undergraduate programs, including programs in computer science, engineering, and business administration. In addition, the university began to offer its courses at locations in Center City Philadelphia and Wayne, Pennsylvania.
