Columbia's main campus occupies more than six city blocks in Morningside Heights, stretching from 114th to 120th Streets and from Amsterdam Avenue to Broadway on the west side of Manhattan. The University's endowment stood at $10.9 billion in 2018, among the largest of any academic institution. As of 2018, Columbia's alumni and affiliates include: five Founding Fathers of the United States; nine Justices of the Supreme Court of the United States, including one Chief Justice; 24 Academy Award winners; 31 Pulitzer Prize winners; 29 National Medal of Science winners; and 108 Nobel laureates in all categories (including 14 alumni Nobel laureates and 48 affiliates Nobel laureates). In addition, Columbia counting among its alumni and affiliates an additional 154 Rhodes Scholars and 318 Marshall Scholars. Columbia is second only to Harvard University in the number of Nobel Prize-winning affiliates, with 48 as of 2016.

The university's research efforts include the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, Goddard Institute for Space Studies and accelerator laboratories with major technology firms such as IBM. Columbia is one of the top-ten funders of basic scientific research in the United States. In 2017, Columbia's undergraduate acceptance rate was 5.8%, making it one of the most selective colleges in the United States, and the second most selective Ivy League school after Harvard. Columbia is consistently ranked as one of the world's top universities. With an undergraduate enrollment of 6,700 students and a graduate enrollment of 15,500 students, Columbia is the third largest university in the United States by enrollment.
