Clark Atlanta University is a private, historically black university in Atlanta, Georgia, United States. It was formed in 1988 with the merger of Clark College and Atlanta University. Clark Atlanta University is a member of the United Negro College Fund and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The university has an enrollment of more than 4,000 students and offers bachelor's and master's degrees in more than 50 areas of study. The university's five schools and colleges include the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Business Administration, the School of Education, the School of Social Work, and the School of Nursing and Health Professions.
Founded in 1869, Clark College was the first four-year institution in Georgia to grant degrees to African-American students. It was also one of the first historically black colleges in the United States. Atlanta University, founded in 1865, was the first graduate school for African Americans. When the two schools merged in 1988, Clark Atlanta University became the largest historically black university in the United States.
The university is located on a 126-acre (0.51 km2) campus in the Atlanta University Center, which is adjacent to the Atlanta city limits in unincorporated Fulton County, Georgia. The campus is in the Vine City neighborhood, just west of Downtown Atlanta. The campus is served by the Vine City and Ashby MARTA stations.
