The Center for Advanced Studies on Puerto Rico and the Caribbean (CASPRC) is an independent, non-profit research institute located in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The Center is dedicated to the advancement of knowledge on Puerto Rico, the Caribbean and their connections to the United States and the world. The Center’s interdisciplinary approach combines the resources of the social sciences, humanities and natural sciences to provide a comprehensive understanding of the region.
The Center was founded in 1966 by Dr. Jorge I. Domínguez and Dr. Antonio Fernós-Isern, two Puerto Rican scholars who recognized the need for an institution that would promote the study of Puerto Rico and the Caribbean and serve as a catalyst for the development of the region. The Center is governed by a Board of Directors and has a staff of over 30 research associates and support personnel. The Center’s library houses one of the most comprehensive collections of materials on Puerto Rico and the Caribbean in the world.
The Center’s research programs are organized around four themes: Puerto Rico and its diaspora; the Caribbean in the global context; environment and natural resources; and culture, arts and society. The Center also houses the Puerto Rico Data Bank, the largest social science data archive in Puerto Rico, and the Caribbean Environmental Program, which promotes research and education on environmental issues in the region.
The Center’s publications include the peer-reviewed journal Caribbean Studies, the quarterly newsletter Puerto Rico y el Caribe, and a series of books, monographs and working papers. The Center also sponsors conferences, seminars and workshops on a variety of topics related to its research programs.
