Carthage College is a private liberal arts college in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Founded in 1847, it is one of the oldest colleges in Wisconsin and the first college in the state to be affiliated with the Lutheran Church. The college enrolls approximately 2,000 students from more than 40 states and 50 countries. The student body is approximately evenly split between men and women, and the average class size is 20 students.
Carthage offers more than 40 majors and 30 minors, as well as special programs in business, education, and nursing. The most popular majors at Carthage are business, psychology, and biology. The college is also home to the Center for Innovation in the Liberal Arts, which promotes interdisciplinary and collaborative approaches to teaching and learning.
Carthage is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The college is also a member of the Association of American Colleges and Universities, the Council of Independent Colleges, and the Wisconsin Association of Independent Colleges and Universities.
The campus of Carthage College is located on the shore of Lake Michigan, just south of downtown Kenosha. The college grounds include an 18-hole golf course, a nature preserve, and several athletic fields. The college also owns and operates a 1,200-acre farm in nearby Franksville.
Carthage College is governed by a Board of Trustees, which includes representatives from the Lutheran Church, the college faculty, the student body, and the general public. The college president is the chief executive officer of the college and is responsible for its day-to-day operations.
The Carthage College Foundation is a separate, nonprofit organization that provides financial support to the college. The foundation manages an endowment fund and raises money through annual appeals and other fundraising activities.
Carthage College is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod. The college chaplain is a member of the faculty and provides spiritual guidance to students, faculty, and staff. The college offers a variety of religious and spiritual life programs, including weekly chapel services, Bible study groups, and retreats.
