Founded in 1880, Bridgewater College is a private, four-year liberal arts college located in the Central Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. The college has approximately 1,850 undergraduate students and offers more than 50 majors, minors and special programs. The college is affiliated with the Church of the Brethren.
Bridgewater College was founded by John D. Heatwole, a local farmer, and D.J. Miller, a local preacher. The two men wanted to provide higher education opportunities for the young people of the Shenandoah Valley. The college opened its doors in September 1880 with 12 students.
Today, Bridgewater College is a thriving community of scholars and learners. The college is committed to providing an excellent liberal arts education. The faculty is dedicated to teaching and the students are engaged in their learning. The college offers a variety of academic programs and extracurricular activities.
The college is located in the town of Bridgewater, Virginia. The town is situated in the Shenandoah Valley, between the Blue Ridge and Allegheny Mountains. The college campus is just a short walk from downtown Bridgewater.
