The school was founded in 1946 as Triple Cities College, a joint endeavor of the local schools of Broome, Tioga, and Chenango counties. Binghamton University is one of the four university centers of the State University of New York (SUNY) system. The school is also sometimes referred to as SUNY Binghamton, Binghamton University, or BU.

The school's athletic teams compete in the NCAA Division I America East Conference. The Binghamton Senators, the school's American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, play their home games on campus at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. The Bearcats have appeared in the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship Tournament four times: in 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012. The Bearcats have also appeared in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) four times: in 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012.

The school became a four-year college in 1950 and was renamed Harpur College, after Robert Harpur, a colonial-era figure who established schools in the region. The school became a part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system in 1965 and was renamed Binghamton University in 1967.
