Bethune-Cookman University is a private, historically black university in Daytona Beach, Florida. The university is affiliated with the United Methodist Church. It was founded in 1904 by Mary McLeod Bethune as a school for African-American girls. It later became a coeducational institution and began offering graduate degrees in the 1970s. The university is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Bethune-Cookman University enrolls approximately 4,000 students on its main campus and at its satellite campuses. The university offers more than 50 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The university's athletic teams compete in the NCAA Division I Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

Bethune-Cookman University was founded in 1904 by Mary McLeod Bethune, a civil rights leader, educator, and entrepreneur. Bethune believed that education was the key to success for African Americans. She started the school with just five students in a rented cottage. The school grew quickly and by the 1920s, it had more than 500 students.

In 1923, the school was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. In 1929, the school was renamed Bethune-Cookman College. The college continued to grow in the 1930s and 1940s. In 1942, the college established a nursing program. In 1943, the college began offering graduate degrees.

In the 1950s, the college began to integrate its student body. In 1971, the college became coeducational. In 1974, the college became a university and was renamed Bethune-Cookman University.

The university has been accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools since 1923. The university offers more than 50 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The university's athletic teams compete in the NCAA Division I Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
