Belmont University is a private Christian university in Nashville, Tennessee. Founded in 1890 by schoolteachers Ida Hood and Susan Heron, Belmont is the largest private university in Tennessee and the only one in the state affiliated with the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities. The university's name comes from its location on a hill in the Nashville neighborhood of Belmont.
The school was founded as Belmont College for Women and became Belmont University after a merger with Ward-Belmont College in 1951. The merger made Belmont the first coeducational institution in Tennessee. The university is made up of nine colleges and schools: the Gordon E. Inman College of Health Sciences and Nursing, the Jack C. Massey College of Business, the Mike Curb College of Entertainment and Music Business, the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, the College of Sciences and Mathematics, the School of Education, the School of Law, and the School of Music.
Belmont is known for its music business program, which is housed in the Curb College. The program was ranked No. 3 in the nation by Billboard in 2017. The university is also home to the Belmont Bruins men's basketball team, which has made two NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament appearances.
