Beal University is a private research university in Washington, D.C. It was founded in 1869 as a college for African-American women. It is now a coeducational university with an enrollment of over 4,000 students. The university is known for its programs in the liberal arts, sciences, and business.

Beal University was founded by Dr. Charles Beal, a white man, and Dr. Rebecca Crumpler, an African-American woman, as the Normal School for Colored Girls. The school was created in response to the lack of educational opportunities for African-American women. The school was originally located in the basement of the Fifteenth Street Presbyterian Church.

In 1879, the school was renamed the Miner Normal School in honor of its first president, Dr. James E. Miner. The school moved to a new location in 1887 and was renamed the Miner Normal School and College for Women. In 1904, the school was again renamed, this time to the Miner Teachers College.

The college became a coeducational institution in 1955 and was renamed the District of Columbia Teachers College. In 1968, the college was renamed the University of the District of Columbia. In 2004, the university's name was changed to the University of the District of Columbia David A. Clarke School of Law.

The university is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. It offers bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees. The university's campus is located in the historic U Street Corridor.
