APSU was founded in 1927 as Austin Peay Normal School, a two-year teachers' training school. The school was named for then-Governor Austin Peay, who is credited with expanding access to education in Tennessee. The school became a four-year institution in 1930 and was renamed Austin Peay State College. In 1943, the school was designated a state teachers college and granted the authority to award bachelor's degrees. In 1963, the college was renamed Austin Peay State University, and in 1979, it became part of the Tennessee Board of Regents system.
Today, APSU is a comprehensive university offering bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees.
