Augustana College was founded in 1860 by Swedish immigrants who were members of the Augustana Synod. The college's first president was Lars Paul Esbjörn, a former professor at Uppsala University. The college's charter was granted by the Illinois General Assembly in 1863.
The college began offering graduate programs in 1954 and now offers more than 50 majors and pre-professional programs to its approximately 2,500 students. The college is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
Augustana College is governed by a nine-member Board of Trustees, six of whom are elected by the college's alumni. The college's president is selected by the board and serves as the chief executive officer of the college. The current president is Steven C. Bahls, who has served in that role since 2005.
The college's academic programs are organized into five divisions: the Division of Arts and Humanities, the Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences, the Division of Education, the Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, and the Division of Social Sciences.
The Division of Arts and Humanities offers majors in art, communication studies, English, foreign languages and literatures, history, music, philosophy, religion, and theatre arts. The Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences offers majors in anthropology, biology, business administration, chemistry, economics, education, political science, psychology, sociology, and social work.
The Division of Education offers majors in art education, physical education, and special education. The Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics offers majors in biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, and physics.
