Augusta University is a public research university in Augusta, Georgia. The university is one of four research universities in the University System of Georgia and is also the largest of the system's three comprehensive universities. It is the fourth oldest public university in the state and one of the thirty-six oldest public universities in the United States. Augusta University consists of nine colleges and schools: the James M. Hull College of Business, the College of Education, the College of Nursing, the College of Allied Health Sciences, the Medical College of Georgia, the Dental College of Georgia, the Graduate School, the Health Sciences Campus, and the J. Harold Harrison, M.D. Education Commons. In addition to these academic units, the university operates Augusta University Medical Center, which includes the Children's Hospital of Georgia and the Georgia Cancer Center.

Augusta University was founded in 1828 as Augusta Medical Academy and became a state-chartered university in 1833. The university has undergone several name changes over the years, most recently in 2013 when the Board of Regents approved the consolidation of Augusta State University and Georgia Health Sciences University to create Augusta University. The consolidation brought the Medical College of Georgia, the dental school, and the two hospitals under the same umbrella as the two universities.

The university's main campus is located in Augusta's Summerville neighborhood, just west of downtown. The medical campus is located across the Savannah River in downtown Augusta. The university has a satellite campus in Athens, Georgia, and operates clinical campuses in Albany, Georgia; Savannah, Georgia; and Augusta, Georgia.

Augusta University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award bachelor's, master's, specialist, and doctoral degrees. The Medical College of Georgia is accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education. The Dental College of Georgia is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation.

The university's athletic teams, known as the Augusta Jaguars, compete in NCAA Division II and are members of the Peach Belt Conference. The university fields teams in men's and women's basketball, cross country, golf, tennis, and track and field; men's baseball and soccer; and women's softball and volleyball.
