Auburn University is a public research university in Auburn, Alabama, United States. With more than 24,000 students and 1,200 faculty members, it is one of the largest universities in the state. Auburn was chartered on February 1, 1856, as East Alabama Male College, a private liberal arts school affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1872, under the Morrill Act, it became the state's first public land-grant university and was renamed as the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama. In 1892, it became the first four-year coeducational school in Alabama with programs in the liberal arts, sciences, and engineering. It was renamed Alabama Polytechnic Institute (API) in 1899 and offered its first graduate degree in 1903. In 1960, its name was changed to Auburn University to acknowledge the varied academic programs and larger curriculum of a major university.

Auburn is a land-grant university and one of the state's two public flagship universities. The university is also classified as a Doctoral University with Very High Research Activity by the Carnegie Foundation. The university has been ranked as the 53rd-best public university in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. Auburn is one of the largest universities in Alabama, with an enrollment of over 28,000 students and 1,200 faculty members. The school's 1,851-acre campus is one of the largest in the United States.

Auburn's history is long and storied, dating back to its founding in 1856. The university has produced many notable alumni, including two U.S. Senators, a Nobel Prize winner, and an astronaut.
