Founded in 1822 as Limestone Springs Female Academy, it is the oldest continuously operating university in Alabama and the fifth oldest in the United States. It became Athens Female Academy in 1839, Athens Female Institute in 1856, and finally Athens State University in 1998. Athens State University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award baccalaureate and master's degrees. The university offers more than fifty undergraduate and graduate programs of study in business, education, the liberal arts, and sciences. The average class size is nineteen students, and the student-to-faculty ratio is fourteen-to-one.
