The Art Academy of Cincinnati is a private, four-year college of art and design located in the historic Over-the-Rhine district of Cincinnati, Ohio, United States. Founded in 1869 as the Cincinnati Academy of Fine Arts, the Art Academy is the fifth oldest college of art and design in the United States and the oldest in Ohio. It was also the first art school west of the Allegheny Mountains. The Art Academy of Cincinnati awards the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) and Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degrees. It is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) and is a member of the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design (AICAD).
The Art Academy of Cincinnati was founded in 1869 by a group of artists and businessmen who wanted to bring the study of art to the Midwest. The Academy was the first art school west of the Allegheny Mountains and the fifth oldest college of art and design in the United States. The original location was on Fourth Street in downtown Cincinnati. In 1878, the Academy moved to a new building on Gilbert Avenue in the Clifton neighborhood. The Gilbert Avenue building was designed by the architect Samuel Hannaford, who also designed Cincinnati's Music Hall and Union Terminal. The Academy remained at the Gilbert Avenue location until 1971, when it moved to its current location in the Over-the-Rhine neighborhood.
The Art Academy of Cincinnati offers the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) and Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degrees. The BFA degree is a four-year program that includes courses in studio art, art history, and liberal arts. The MFA degree is a two-year program that focuses on studio art. The Art Academy of Cincinnati is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) and is a member of the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design (AICAD).
The Art Academy of Cincinnati has a long history of educating artists who have gone on to successful careers in the arts. alumni include the painters Edward Hopper and Andrew Wyeth, the photographer Annie Leibovitz, and the fashion designer Tom Ford.
