Arizona State University (ASU) is a public research university in the United States. Founded in 1885 as the Tempe Normal School for the Arizona Territory, the school came under control of the Arizona Board of Regents in 1945 and was renamed Arizona State College. A four-year undergraduate institution, ASU is classified as a research university with "high research activity" by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. ASU is one of the largest public universities by enrollment in the U.S. As of fall 2019, the university had about 90,000 students attending classes across its metropolitan campuses in Phoenix, Tempe, and Mesa, all of which are part of the Arizona State University System.

The main campus of ASU is located on 640 acres (2.6 km2) in Tempe, Arizona, about 20 minutes from downtown Phoenix. The university comprises four separate campuses: the original Tempe campus, the West campus, the Polytechnic campus, and the Downtown Phoenix campus. The Tempe campus is the largest, with about 40,000 students. The university also operates a number of smaller campuses and centers throughout Arizona.

ASU offers more than 350 undergraduate majors led by 1,100 full-time faculty members in 17 colleges and schools, and more than 150 graduate programs with over 3,000 faculty members teaching in over 100 graduate programs. ASU has an extensive student life program, with over 1,000 registered student organizations. ASU also operates a number of athletic programs, including Division I sports teams in baseball, basketball, football, golf, and track and field.

ASU is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. The university is also a member of the Association of American Universities and is ranked among the top research universities in the United States by several measures. ASU is classified as a research university with "high research activity" by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.

ASU was founded in 1885 as the Tempe Normal School, a normal school (teacher-training institution) in Tempe, Arizona. The school was created to train teachers for the Arizona Territory. The first classes were held in 1886 with 32 students in a single room. The school moved to its current location in 1889, where it was renamed the Tempe Normal School. The school became a state-supported teachers college in 1925, and was renamed the Arizona State Teachers College. A four-year undergraduate institution, the college was renamed Arizona State College in 1945, and finally Arizona State University in 1958.

The university has undergone a number of changes in its history, including a merger with the former Phoenix Union High School in 1946. The school became a part of the Arizona State University System in 1945, and was renamed the Arizona State College. The school was renamed Arizona State University in 1958.

ASU is currently divided into 17 colleges and schools, which offer more than 350 undergraduate majors and over 150 graduate programs.
