Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (ACPHS) is a private college in Albany, New York. It is one of only four pharmacy colleges in the state of New York and the only one in the Capital Region. The college offers a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program as well as undergraduate and graduate programs in the health sciences.
ACPHS was founded in 1881 as the Albany College of Pharmacy. It was the first pharmacy college in New York State and one of the first in the country. The college was founded by a group of local pharmacists who wanted to improve the quality of pharmacy education and practice in the state. The college grew steadily in its early years, adding a hospital pharmacy program in the 1890s and a school of nursing in the early 1900s.
In the mid-20th century, the college began to expand its programs beyond pharmacy. In the 1950s, it added a school of medical technology and a program in dental hygiene. In the 1960s, the college added programs in radiologic technology and physical therapy. In the 1970s, the college added a school of health sciences, which offers undergraduate and graduate programs in a variety of health-related fields.
ACPHS has a long history of leadership in pharmacy education and practice. It was one of the first colleges in the country to offer a four-year PharmD program and it was one of the first to require its students to complete a residency program before they could graduate. The college has also been a leader in the use of technology in pharmacy education, being one of the first to offer online courses and distance learning programs.
ACPHS is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Its PharmD program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education.
