William & Mary is a public research university in Williamsburg, Virginia. Founded in 1693 by King William III and Queen Mary II of England, it is the second-oldest institution of higher education in the United States, after Harvard University. It is named after the reigning monarchs at the time of its founding. The university is classified among "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity." Its undergraduate programs are highly ranked by U.S. News & World Report in a number of categories, and its graduate programs are also highly regarded.

The university is organized into four schools: the College of William & Mary, the Mason School of Business, the School of Education, and the School of Marine Science. The College of William & Mary offers a liberal arts education and is the oldest college in the United States.
