Western New Mexico University is a public university in Silver City, New Mexico. It was founded in 1893 as a normal school. It became a four-year institution in 1948 and a university in 1963. The school's main campus is located on 220 acres (0.89 km2) of land in the historic downtown area of Silver City. The university also has branch campuses in Albuquerque, Gallup, and Roswell.

The university offers over 70 undergraduate programs and over 25 graduate programs. The most popular undergraduate majors are business, education, and psychology. The university is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.

The school's athletic teams are known as the Mustangs and compete in the NCAA Division II Lone Star Conference. The school's colors are purple and gold.

The university has an enrollment of approximately 4,000 students, most of whom are from New Mexico. The student body is diverse, with students from all 50 states and over 60 countries represented. The university has a strong commitment to serving the needs of the region's Native American population.

The university is governed by a Board of Regents. The school's president is Joseph Sheppard.
