Wesleyan College, located in Macon, Georgia, is the first college in the world chartered to grant degrees to women. It was founded in 1836 by Georgia Methodists, and its charter was approved by the Georgia legislature in 1839. The college's first president was Methodist minister and educator Ignatius Few.

Wesleyan's founders believed that women should have the same educational opportunities as men. The college's curriculum was modeled after that of men's colleges of the time, and its graduates were eligible to receive the same degrees as their male counterparts.

Wesleyan's early years were marked by financial difficulties and a lack of students.
