The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) is a public research university located in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. It is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). USM is a member of the Universities Research Association (URA) and the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU). The university was founded in 1910 as a teachers' college and was later renamed Mississippi Southern College after acquiring university status in 1962. The name was changed again in 1968 to the University of Southern Mississippi. USM is the largest university in the state of Mississippi and is categorized as an R2: Doctoral University - Higher Research Activity by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. The university enrolls over 16,000 students from all 50 states and over 70 countries. USM offers over 180 programs of study leading to bachelor's, master's, specialist, and doctoral degrees. The university is home to the Thad Cochran Marine Aquaculture Center, the John C. Stennis Institute of Government, and the Center for Polymer Science and Engineering. USM is also a member of the Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU).
