The University of South Alabama (USA) is a public, coeducational university located in Mobile, Alabama, United States. It was created by an act of the Alabama Legislature in May, 1963. The campus is located on a 1,200-acre (4.9 km2) tract of land along the north shore of Mobile Bay. The school's colors are black and gold, and its athletic teams are nicknamed the Jaguars. It is the only member of the University of Alabama System located in Mobile County. USA is the largest of the three degree-granting institutions in the Mobile area and offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs. The school has an enrollment of over 16,000 students, with over 14,000 of these enrolled in undergraduate programs. The university offers a semester-based academic calendar and awards bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in over fifty departments and programs. The school is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award degrees at the baccalaureate and master's levels.
