The University of North Alabama was founded as LaGrange College by the Alabama Legislature on February 11, 1830. LaGrange College was the first state-supported college in Alabama and one of the first in the United States.

The school struggled in its early years, due in part to the economic depression of the 1830s. In 1851, the Alabama Legislature voted to move the school to the city of Florence. The school was renamed the University of North Alabama in 1872.

UNA began admitting women in 1892 and became a coeducational institution. The school began offering graduate programs in the 1950s. In 1969, the University of North Alabama became part of the newly created Alabama State University System.
