The University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) is a public research university in Duluth, Minnesota. Founded in 1895 as the Duluth Normal School, it is the second oldest member of the University of Minnesota system and has been part of the system since 1947. The university is ranked as the 85th best public university in the United States and the 4th best public university in the Midwest by U.S. News & World Report. It is also ranked as the 55th best university for undergraduate teaching and the 29th best value school in the nation by the same publication. The university enrolls 11,625 students in 15 colleges and schools and offers 85 bachelor's, 49 master's, and 32 doctoral degree programs. The main campus is located on 193 acres (0.78 km2) of land on the west side of the city of Duluth. The university also operates two satellite campuses, one in the city of Rochester and one in the Twin Cities suburb of Crookston.

UMD is one of the five universities in the country that offer a medical school, pharmacy school, and a dental school on one campus. These schools are collectively known as the Duluth Campus of the University of Minnesota Medical School. The university is also home to the Large Lakes Observatory, a research center focused on the study of the world's large lakes. The school's athletic teams compete in Division I of the NCAA and are known as the Bulldogs. They compete in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) and have won two NCAA Division I men's hockey championships, in 1984 and 1985.
