The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) is a public historically black college located in Princess Anne, Maryland, United States. Founded in 1886 as the Maryland Agricultural and Mechanical College, it was the first state-sponsored higher education institution for African Americans in the United States. It is a member of the University System of Maryland. UMES is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

In 1867, the Maryland General Assembly appropriated funds to establish a separate college for African Americans in the state. The school was first located in Church Hill, Queen Anne's County, Maryland. It opened its doors on September 3, 1886, with two instructors and eleven students. The school offered instruction in agriculture, mechanical arts, and domestic science.

In 1907, the school moved to its current location in Princess Anne, Maryland. The school was renamed the Maryland State College for Negroes in 1914. In 1931, the college became part of the University of Maryland System and was renamed the Maryland State College. In 1948, the college was renamed the University of Maryland Eastern Shore to reflect its location on the eastern shore of the state.

The university offers bachelor's degrees in 37 disciplines, master's degrees in 14 disciplines, and one doctoral degree in marine-estuarine-environmental sciences. The student body consists of approximately 4,000 students, of which 80% are African American. The campus covers 720 acres (290 ha) of land.

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore is a member of the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges, the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities, the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, the United Negro College Fund, and the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The school's athletic teams compete in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

The university has been ranked by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top public historically black colleges and universities in the United States.
