The University of Louisiana at Lafayette—also called UL Lafayette and UL—is a public research university in Lafayette, Louisiana. It is the largest university in the Acadiana region and the third-largest in the state, with over 18,000 students. It is a member of the University of Louisiana System and is categorized as a Doctoral University: Higher Research Activity by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. UL Lafayette evolved from the University of Southwestern Louisiana, founded in 1898, and is the second-oldest public university in the state. It was renamed the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in 1999.

The university offers Louisiana's only Ph.D. in francophone studies and the state's only industrial design degree. UL Lafayette is home to Louisiana's largest public library system on a university campus. It is also one of the nation's few universities with an extensive collection of French-language resources.

The university has been labeled one of the "Public Ivies" as one of the best public universities in the United States, and it is a member of the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities. It has been designated a " Carnegie Doctoral University: Higher Research Activity " and is one of only four in the state. UL Lafayette is a space-grant institution and a member of the Southwestern Association of Colleges and Schools.

The university athletic teams are known as the Ragin' Cajuns and compete in NCAA Division I, fielding 17 varsity teams in 10 sports. The football team plays its home games at Cajun Field, and the men's basketball team plays its home games at the Cajundome.
