The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) is a public research university in Urbana and Champaign, Illinois. It is the flagship institution of the University of Illinois system and a member of the Association of American Universities. UIUC was founded in 1867 as a land-grant institution and is a research-intensive, major graduate university with a strong commitment to undergraduate education. The university is classified as an R1 Doctoral Research University under the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education and is noted for its highly ranked engineering, agriculture, business, architecture, and liberal arts programs.

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is one of the original 37 public land-grant institutions created after the American Civil War and the Morrill Act of 1862. The Illinois General Assembly created the Illinois Industrial University on March 2, 1867, and soon after, they began construction of its campus in Urbana. The university opened for classes on September 18, 1868, with two faculty members and 77 students. The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is the flagship institution of the University of Illinois system and is one of the nation’s leading public research universities.
