Founded in 1892, Strayer University is a private, for-profit university headquartered in Washington, D.C. Strayer University has 38 locations in 15 states and the District of Columbia as well as an online division. The university offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in business administration, accounting, information technology, education, public administration, and health services administration.

Strayer University was founded by Dr. S. Robert Strayer, a former public school teacher and administrator, as a business college in Baltimore, Maryland. In 1898, the college expanded its curriculum to include courses in accounting and business law and moved to Washington, D.C. In the early 1900s, the college began offering courses in shorthand and typing. In 1909, the college was renamed Strayer's Business College.

In the 1920s, Strayer's Business College expanded its curriculum to include courses in secretarial science and business administration. In 1925, the college was accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. In 1929, the college moved to its current location at 12th and U Streets in Northwest Washington, D.C.

In the 1930s, the college began offering courses in accounting and education. In 1935, the college was renamed Strayer College. In 1936, the college was approved by the Maryland State Board of Education to offer two-year teacher education programs. In 1939, the college was accredited by the American Association of Collegiate Schools of Business.

In the 1940s, the college expanded its curriculum to include courses in public administration and health services administration. In 1947, the college was approved by the Maryland State Board of Education to offer four-year bachelor's degree programs. In 1948, the college was accredited by the National Association of Schools of Business.

In the 1950s, the college began offering courses in information technology. In 1959, the college was approved by the Maryland State Board of Education to offer graduate degree programs. In the 1960s, the college expanded its graduate program offerings to include master's degree programs in business administration, education, and public administration.

In the 1970s, the college began offering courses in computer science. In 1975, the college was accredited by the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. In 1979, the college was approved by the Maryland State Board of Education to offer doctorate degree programs.

In the 1980s, the college expanded its online education offerings. In 1987, the college was accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council. In 1989, the college was approved by the Maryland State Board of Education to offer associate degree programs.

In the 1990s, the college expanded its curriculum to include courses in criminal justice and homeland security. In 1991, the college was approved by the Maryland State Board of Education to offer bachelor's degree programs in business administration and accounting. In 1993, the college was accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools. In 1995, the college was approved by the Maryland State Board of Education to offer master's degree programs in business administration and education.

In the 2000s, the college expanded its curriculum to include courses in psychology and sociology. In 2001, the college was approved by the Maryland State Board of Education to offer doctoral degree programs in business administration and education. In 2003, the college was accredited by the Distance Education Accrediting Commission. In 2005, the college was approved by the Maryland State Board of Education to offer associate degree programs in business administration and accounting.

Strayer University is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools, the Distance Education Accrediting Commission, and the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. The university is approved by the Maryland State Board of Education to offer associate, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degree programs.
