St. Mary's University is a private research university in San Antonio, Texas. The Catholic university is the oldest in the state and one of the oldest west of the Mississippi River. It was founded in 1852 by the Society of Mary, a Roman Catholic religious congregation, as Our Lady's Academy. The congregation had been founded in France in 1816 and sent missionaries to the United States in 1839. In 1898, the academy became a college and began offering bachelor's degrees. In 1911, it became a coeducational institution and changed its name to St. Mary's College. The school became a university in 1925 and now offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs. The university is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. It has an enrollment of approximately 5,000 students.
