South Dakota State University is a public research university in Brookings, South Dakota. The university is the largest in the state and is a member of the South Dakota Board of Regents system. The university offers associate, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in more than 200 areas of study, and is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. Founded in 1881 as the state's land-grant university, SDSU became the largest institution of higher education in South Dakota in 1941 when it absorbed the former University of South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. The university has a strong research program, with over $200 million in annual research expenditures. SDSU is home to the South Dakota Art Museum, the Brookings Summer Arts Festival, and the annual Brookings JazzFest. The university also operates the Brookings Agricultural Experiment Station and the International Water Institute.
