Founded in 1890, Savannah State University is a public, historically black university located in Savannah, Georgia. The university is a member-school of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. It is the oldest public historically black university in Georgia and the second-oldest in the United States. The university is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Savannah State University offers bachelor's and master's degrees in a variety of disciplines, including business, education, engineering, sciences, and liberal arts. The university is home to a number of research centers and institutes, including the Center for Coastal Ecology, the Marine Science Research Institute, and the Georgia Sea Grant Consortium.

The university's athletic teams, known as the Savannah State Tigers, compete in the NCAA Division I Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. The Tigers have won a number of conference championships in recent years, including titles in baseball, softball, and track and field.
