San Francisco State University is a public university in San Francisco, California. Founded in 1899 as a normal school, it is the oldest of the 23 campuses of the California State University (CSU) system. It was one of the first schools in the country to offer bachelor's degrees in liberal arts and sciences. It is also one of the largest universities in the state, with over 30,000 students.

The university is located in the southwestern corner of the city, near Lake Merced and the Pacific Ocean. It is situated on a 55-acre (22 ha) campus. The main campus consists of seven buildings, including the J. Paul Leonard Library, which is the largest library in the CSU system. The campus is also home to the Fine Arts Museum, the Museum of African Diaspora, and the University Art Gallery.

The university offers bachelor's degrees in over 100 areas of study, as well as master's degrees in several disciplines. It is one of the few universities in the country to offer a bachelor's degree in Asian American Studies. The university is also home to the nationally renowned Creative Writing Program.
