The college was founded in 1846 by Boniface Wimmer, a German Benedictine monk. The school was originally located in Carrolltown, Pennsylvania, about 60 miles east of Pittsburgh. In 1848, the school moved to its current location in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. The college is named after Saint Vincent de Paul, the patron saint of charity.
