Saint Martin's University was founded in 1895 by Benedictine monks from the Abbey of Saint Martin of Tours in Lacey, Washington. The monks had come to the Puget Sound area in 1857, and built the first Catholic church in Washington Territory at Steilacoom. In 1891, they founded a boys' boarding school, which later became the present-day Bellarmine Preparatory School. The Benedictines purchased a tract of land in Lacey in 1893, and two years later, Saint Martin's College opened its doors to students.

The college was originally located in the former Lacey Hotel, which the monks had purchased and renovated. In 1900, the college moved to a new campus on the present-day site. The campus has grown steadily over the years, and now comprises more than 300 acres (1.2 km2).

Saint Martin's University is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. It offers bachelor's degrees in more than 30 majors and 11 minors, as well as master's degrees in business, education, nursing, and engineering.

The university is home to a number of clubs and organizations, including the Saint Martin's Abbey monks. The campus is also home to a variety of sports teams, which compete in the NCAA Division II Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
