Penn State Mont Alto was founded in 1931 as a two-year branch of Pennsylvania State University. The campus was initially located on 12 acres of land donated by the Borough of Mont Alto. In the 1960s, the campus began to expand its academic offerings, and began to attract students from outside the local area.
