Northwestern Oklahoma State University is a public university in Alva, Oklahoma. It is a member of the Oklahoma State System of Higher Education. The university offers bachelor's and master's degrees in a variety of disciplines.

The university was founded in 1897 as Northwestern Territorial Normal School. It was established to provide teacher training for the newly created Oklahoma Territory. The school's first class graduated in 1898. In 1901, the school was renamed Northwestern State Normal School. It became a four-year institution in 1909 and was renamed again in 1911 to Northwestern State Teachers College. In 1939, the name was changed to Northwestern Oklahoma State College. The school became a university in 1974 and was renamed Northwestern Oklahoma State University.

The university is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. It is home to the Ranger College of Nursing and Allied Health, which is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.

The university's athletic teams compete in the Great American Conference. The Rangers football team has won two national championships, in 1966 and 1987.

The university's campus is located in northwest Oklahoma, about 100 miles from Oklahoma City. It is situated on a bluff overlooking the Salt Fork of the Arkansas River. The campus consists of over 50 buildings, including the J.W. Martin Library, which houses over 400,000 volumes.
